I found this very interesting as he is not advocating a spiritual sytem at all....he is just trying to teach the art of being fully conscious.
Was just interested what chi kung practitioners think of the way he is describing. Rather than to think of nothing he seems to be saying think of everying.
The only thing worse than being talked about is not being talked about. Oscar Wilde
From my point of view he speaks about being mindfull, not to think of everything. If you try to think of everything you will end up frozen in place unable to do anything to not loose your attempted grasp of everything
On the part where he discusses listening he basically says don't think.. of nothing or of everything.
From a chi kung point of view "Don't do anything, don't think of anything" is indeed familiar.
Although he does not advocate a specific spiritual system it is obvious that he was immensely spiritual.
When we talk about meditation and use words we unwillingly set frames where there should be none.
Words have limits, meditation has not.
This is why we perceive different people talking about the inner experiences differently. Some words count more for us and some other less depending on the extent they reflect our own understanding. Or else they create different images in us. However, because meditation is always an individual experience the aim is to find your own words.
Well this is how I understand it.

Different teachers use different methods.
I like the metaphor of a mountain peak. To get up there, you generally have a choice of several roads. Yet you need to choose one specific road and start walking, otherwise you will not get to the peak. Sadly enough many people spend their life thinking and worrying about which road to take and never even start walking... thus for me I am happy with the method, the road, I learned in our school and which works for me. And interestingly enough when I don't think of anything, I am often aware of everything. Yet I do not worry about this, I just enjoy it.
