Nice one
Yes, well done for this series,
really enjoying it.
That has got to be almost impossible to apply on Sifu, as you can't even plant the foot on his knee for the run up?
Great to see, looking forward to the rest

Shaolin Counters Vs Muay Thai Attacks
Series 1
"Hard, Forceful Counters often used by External Martial Artists"
Attack 6 - Series 1 - 'Narai Kham Samud - King Narai Crosses Ocean'
The attacker (Black) leaps in with a flying side-kick, targeting the head, throat or chest.

Defence 6 - Series 1 - 'Green Dragon Shoots Pearl'
The defender (White) steps back to avoid the kick, brushes the leg away as it's energy is spent, then counter attacks with a palm, fist or chop, depending on the situation. This is a good example of 'Defence cum Counter' and how a pattern can represent many principles, not just a fixed form or application. Video Clip 6 - 1

Excellent!
Jamie Siheng,
excellent descriptions/photos. Most grateful that Sigung and yourself have taken the time to expand this thread. It reinforces what we were shown in the Intensive Course. Any thoughts on a ground fighting series? I Would be keen to see that on the forum in a similar format.
Thank you

Excellent response Jamie and great videos, thank you Sifu, Johnny, Mark and anyone else involved.
I have only just found this thread and would like to add some other defences to those attacks, taken from our 16 combat sequances and the Tiger Dragon set, for interrest.
A 1. Crocodile sweeps tail; D 1. Single knife, followed by Two tigers subdue a dragon.
A 2. Elephant push; D 2. Bar the big boss, followed with precious duck swims through the lotus.
A 3. Giant throws an axe; D 3. Double butterfly palms fly together.
A 4. Serpent sneeks into ocean kindom; D 4. Attack the opponent's kicking leg with, White horse presents hoof, or let the opponents kicking leg pass using, Golden cockerel stands solitarily.
A 5. king Ram walks in forest; D 5. Z shaped butterfly palms with Unicorn stance.
Thanks, this helped expand my ideas for these patterns.
RGDS,
Steve.

Shaolin Counters Vs Muay Thai AttacksAttack 7 - Series 1 - 'Bansean Thodsokan - Cut the Giants Neck'
Series 1
"Hard, Forceful Counters often used by External Martial Artists"
The attacker (Black) leaps in high with a devastating, but risky attack where he smashes both knees and elbows into the opponents head.
There are numerous variations of this technique, some from being held in a clinch.

Defence 7 - Series 1 - 'Heavenly King Lifts Pagoda and Golden Leopard'
The defender (White) uses an equally deadly counter to the attack.
He intercepts the movement while floating the elbows, re-directing the attackers momentum to the side.
With the would-be attacker completely exposed, he tames, controls and completes with a decisive strike to the throat.
The name of this pattern, 'Heavenly King Lifts Pagoda' is an especially profound one; it holds many secrets to it's various applications.

Shaolin Counters Vs Muay Thai Attacks
Series 2
'Flowing Techniques often used by Internal Kungfu Practitioners'
Attack 1 - Series 2 - 'Jarakhe Fad Hang - Crocodile Sweeps Tail'
The attacker (Red) turns to avoid a level punch and kicks the temple or jaw with a hooking motion, connecting with the heel.

Defence 1 - Series 2 - 'Bail Moon from Sea Bottom'
The defender (White) avoids the kick by stepping forwards and sideways (circular against straight).
After taming, or even floating or gripping the leg, he counters with a deadly attack to the groin. He also has many options for follow-ups should they be required.
Notice how this 'Soft' defence affects my balance, as my kick was originally aiming for a 'Hard' target. Video Clip 1 - 2

"Canon from the Ground" springs to mind as an alternative response. For those that don't know this pattern (from Crossroads at Four Gates), sink to one knee whilst striking in a fashion similar to an "uppercut" at the exposed groin (or inner thigh if you're feeling compassionate
).
P.S. Those with a wide enough screen resolution will find a photo of Sifu demonstrating this in the collage at the top of the forum pages.Sifu Andrew Barnett

Shaolin Counters Vs Muay Thai Attacks
Series 2
"Flowing Techniques often used by Internal Kungfu Practitioners"
Attack 2 - Series 2 - 'Yan Erawan - Push Elephant'
The attacker (Black) rushes in to perform a sideways knee, often used to avoid and counter a high strike, as mentioned in Series 1 Attack 2.

Defence 2 - Series 2 - 'Green Dragon Shoots Pearl'
Using a deceptively soft counter, the defender (White) steps back to avoid the strength of the knee attack.
He brushes the knee across the opponent, closing their lower gates; then after ensuring safety, applies a palm strike to the spine, ribs, head or kidneys.
This counter is especially effective, because if the opponent attempts a second attack midway through the defenders counter, it is easy to deal with and carry on regardless.
Highlighting that sometimes medium or large movements are more use than small movements. Video Clip 2 - 2

many thanks
I am very grateful sifu Jamie, I never expected such a response, this all indeed quite helpful! I have not been on here and quite a while and just saw how much this thread has grown and how much you have shared, the interesting pattern names are very interesting as well. To see that Grand Master Wong Kiew Kit applied these counters in pictures is also very exciting!!! Thank you very much! ^-^, much glee.
