      Informed opinion :

All sentient beings have Buddha nature , including the flea in the dog's ear.

However , if all things are equal , humans can acheive Buddhahood easier then their canine relatives .

Thankyou dear Sipak and Sisooks. I knew the answer to this question myself from the literal/logical/intellectual sense, which you have now confirmed for me.

I was just curious to see whom would answer it with the traditional Zen reply.

Let's see who can get it.

          With glowing smile,

          Cymon.

And yet, does it actually affect the answer at all?

Ah Maxime Sisook hit the nail.

Indeed Master Zhaozhou's (Joshu) reply was Wu (Mu).

The reason I asked this question is that I was asked it recently by a gnostic friend, my immediate answer was of course - yes, every being has Buddha nature. At which point he said, 'right, try again' I was thinking to myself 'um ,ok'. At which point he went 'Mu' and I said 'oh yes!'

I think next time someone asks me this I will say 'Cows!'

Even plants and minerals have Buddha-nature.

The fact that "dead" matter like minerals and crystals that grow beautiful in the deep of the mountains are there for us to see is like a ram slamming the fact that everything is/has buddha nature in your face

On Norways national day, may 17th, there was in one of the big newspapers a two page picture showing three partially burnt down houses standing close to eachother near the docks as there was a big fire in the citys old wooden district that night. Fortunately no one was harmed.

As I was looking at the picture I suddenly found it incredibly inspiring, although the three houses were all painted in different colors and standing with two meter gaps between, the roof parts on them that were burnt down made me somehow view them as no longer three different objects, but as a undifferentiated part of a larger whole. The fire just made some of the energy composing the seemingly separated houses wander away as heat and manifesting in other ways. Just like a big mouth taking a bite off the corner of a big sandwich
