  • SUFI – the way of the heart and the healing

    Hello everyone,

I posted this in the German section but didn’t get any answers. My Sifu kindly translated this for me as my English is not so good.

I started practicing “breathing techniques” based on the traditions of the Sufis a few weeks ago. I did this using a CD which explained everything about the application and background very clearly. It feels very positive when I work with the so-called “elements energies”.

After every exercise, the instruction is also given to smile – from the heart! The CD is called “SUFI – the way of the heart and the healing” (translated title from the German “SUFI – Weg des Herzens und der Heilung”) by Yan d’Albert.

Basically you work with various breathing techniques. First it’s all about breathing consciously so that one becomes conscious of one’s breathing. Thereafter, it continues with the “elemental breathing” which can also be done with visualisation and a form of Mantra. The basis is 5 elements: earth, water, fire, air and ether.

There is a breathing technique associated with each of the elements. For example, the water breathing is a gently breathing in through the mouth and a gentle breathing out through the mouth. The earth breathing is in through the nose and out through the nose. In this way, there are 5 different breathing techniques.

They also say that, if practice regularly, the practice has a healing and longevity effect.

Breathing is the secret of life!

    - Does anyone know about Yan d’Albert? Or about these techniques?
    - Is this energy “lower quality”?
    - Can I also practice these techniques before or after my kung fu training?

    Thank you for any answers.

Sufism is a beautiful tradition, which origins are lost in time. Some people believe that is a mystical muslim sect, but the sufis will sustain that they exist before Mohamed.

It´s aim is the ultimate, merging with God. It is a very devotional path that uses stories, dances, music, breathing techniques, wazifas and Zikar as the principal means to achieve deep meditation.

I walked in the Sufi path for a few years and it was a beautiful experience.

    About your questions:

I do not know about Yan d’Albert but I do know about those breathing thechniques. They are great but I do not practice them anymore because I found that Shaoilin Wahnam arts are more effective: give me more benefit in less time.

I would not say at all that is "lower quality". In the devotional practices as the Zikar it is a very "high quality" energy.

Yes you can practice them before or after your kung fu training.

I hope you find a good teacher, because as always depends on it. There is a great school in Holland that I know. Are you practicing alone with a CD or do you have a group? Are you practicing the Zikar?

    Good luck in your exploration

    All the best

    Jose Antonio
