        great player

I like Zidane because he is a great soccer player but the action that the Italian player did we will never know. Apparently Zidane was verbally insulted by the Italian and the Italian thought that Zidane would accept the insult because the "stage" was there (cameras etc). Zidane was underestimated so the headbutt was good enough to knock down the Italian!

Zidane's temper is no better or worse than any other player. The fans are something else!

              On a more serious note....

Zidane was underestimated so the headbutt was good enough to knock down the Italian!
Zidane was disappointing, I feel, and it seems the insult was also good enough to "knock down" Zidane. He should have risen above it.

On such a large stage the pressure is surely immense, but head butts and flying kicks are not acceptable. Many people look up to these football stars as role models and copy their actions. If they see their idols doing this, then sadly some people will also copy this bad behaviour.

There have been players that have controlled themselves despite relentless torment from thousands of people at football matches. John Barnes had to put up with years of racist abuse, but chose to elevate his performance. Once, in full Liverpool kit and mid-match, John Barnes casually backheeled away a banana which had been hurled at him and carried on playing.

I don't actually know, but does anyone know if John Barnes ever lashed out?

Of course he one of the best of the best, no question.

common, at these times trash talking, how lovel, childish, disrespectful it is, belongs to teamsports. Especially to ballsports.
And I am sure it wasn't the first time Zidane got insulted.

His action is simply not acceptable. This action is simply not acceptable to any person.

On such a large stage the pressure is surely immense
I agree the pressure is high, I know it from my own experience in sport.

Please remember: for this pressure of 90' they get very very very well paid. Other people have pressure to find everydays food.
I mean this pressure belongs to this job, everybody knows that.

Actually Zidane's behaviour is not very surprising to me. I have noticed more and more that many sportsman are energetically compelety unbalanced

                        Monkiavelli?

                        Or for another perspective ...

Both teams are pretty much equal
Someone taunts another (skillful player) and, as a direct result, succeeds in getting the other player sent off
Teams are no longer equal, swift victory ensues

                        Is football still a sport?
