Hello all,
I was trying to work out Combat Sequence 6 from the videos, and I'm having trouble seeing it from the various videos of it.
I found this post with a clear picture, though it's for a move in the pakua set. Any help would be appreciated!
Perhaps I can help a little, though it's now 00:52 so we'll see! That's a nice clear picture you found .
So the previous pattern to Dark Dragon Draws Water in this sequence is a Black Tiger from your opponent (who's in left mode). You're in right mode Bow Arrow, and you defend with a Single Tiger Emerges from Cave moving back into right mode False Leg. Now to perform the Dark Dragon Draws Water you move your Single Tiger further up their right arm to their elbow, and expose their ribs by pulling their arm across their body. You simultaneously step in to them, moving into Bow Arrow stance (with your right foot outside their left foot - this causes them to be pushed over your right foot). You also simultaneously palm strike their now exposed ribs. The power for the strike is derived from the rotation of your waist which occurs as your change stance from False Leg to Bow Arrow.
I hope this helps (I'm sure someone else will be able to provide more help here )
Thank you both for your help. I was not able to see that it was a palm strike. So for Dark Dragon, is the palm strike with the fingers facing up, as opposed to pointing to the side as in the picture?
Are you familiar with Taijiquan's pattern Yi Ni Chuan Suo? (Jade Lady Threads Shuttle).
What do you think of it, when you study Dark Dragon Draws Water?

thats funny. the pattern alsmost looks like trapping in jeet kune do, just with an bow and arrow stance added to it. well, kungfu is the mother, so i do not wonder about it

The fingers are pointed to the side in this pattern i.e. the hand is "parallel" to the ground.
Excellent, that was what I couldn't see from the videos.

Ah interesting connection. It didn't occur to me when I was looking at the pattern. I did some looking around and found this video http://www.shaolin.org/video-clips/t.../boxing02.html which has some interesting uses. I thought of it as being similar to immortal emerges from cave.
Take a look as well the Wahnam Taijiquan Combat Sequence 11, Cloud Hands.
Practicing this "Cloud Hand" sequence, we can grasp the essence further with that of Shaolinquan Sequence 6.
Please compare the following:
- The initiator's Snake Hand in the Taijiquan Sequence 11, delivering an attack while deflecting the responder's Snake Hand, and the "Dark Dragon Enters Well" of the responder in the Shaolinquan Sequence 6 to counter "Dark Dragon Draws Water".
It is interesting to note that the palm in "White Snake Shoots Venom" is facing down in that sequence while the palm in "Dark Dragon Enters Well" is facing up.
Why is that?
- The initiator's "Jade Lady Threads Shuttle" in the Taijiquan sequence and the initiator's "Dark Dragon Draws Water" in the Shaolinquan sequence.
- The responder's "step aside and left hand punch" to counter the "Jade Lady Threads Shuttle", and the responder's "Bar the Big Boss" continued with "Dark Dragon Enters Well" to counter the "Dark Dragon Draws Water".
And look at the beautiful flowing of the Snake Hand and Cloud Hands in the Taijiquan sequence, and that same beautiful flowing of the Tiger Claw as well as the Dragon Thread in the Shaolinquan sequence, when countering hand attacks.

A quick top tip -- don't push on the arm you are trapping, or they will fall/collapse/move away and then you won't be able to land your strike on them with your dragon palm. Just trap the arm.
