We are setting up this thread ahead of this year's Summer Camp (4th June - 12th June) to allow the community to come together.
There is going to be a lot to discuss about this years Summer Camp, both before and afterwards. You don't have to be coming to join in.
On another thread we shared this communication from Sifu about the courses:
You suggested that [based on my last 20 years of teaching] I devise .................. I have done that and shall post them on my website soon for participants to choose from.
Soooo, can you guess what Sifu has devised/refined for this years Summer Camp?
Soooo, can you guess what Sifu has devised/refined for this years Summer Camp?
Hmm....
Back to old school training... no new sets to learn... depth, not spread... Sifu has devised/refined something based on his evolved/developed/continued understanding... "I will post them", implying several things have been devised...
My guess - ultimate combat sequences combining Shaolin Kungfu, Tai Chi Chuan, and perhaps combat highlights from other styles Sifu has been teaching over the years
Perhaps not, but I'm sure whatever it is, it'll be awesome!!
Out of interest what would the ultimate combat sequence, made up from various styles, look like Matt? If you were going to create one, what would it consist of?
Dave, if you were going to update the syllabus or sparring methodology, how would you do it?
hmm, well as I’m still a beginner sort of can only ‚try a guess‘.
Sitaigung already published a Shaolin 72 Arts list with a ‘Shaolin Wahnam Version’, so this would be a devised list published on his website to choose from.
Apart from this I’d could only imagine to teach irrespective of the style or set, irrespective of whether it its Tai Chi Chuan or Kung-Fu (and here irrespective of ‘Hung-Gar-Set’ or ‘Praying-Mantis-Set’ or ‘Wing-Chun-Set’). Instead coming from the possible modes of combat like Punshing, Kicking, Felling and devise a list of Patterns of Sets of the school ‘from all backgrounds’ according to these combat modes as being a pattern for ‘Kicking’ and being a pattern for ‘Countering a Kick’. Students may choose from this list and create an own set representing one or more patterns for attack and countering such an attack for each mode of combat (Kicking-pattern 1 – Countering Kick pattern 1 – Kicking-pattern 2 – countering Kick pattern 2 – Felling pattern 1 – Countering Felling 1 etc). But cannot say whether this even would be new or does already exist in some form, nor whether it would make sense at all…

Hi Sisook,
This is a huuuge question. The syllabus and methodology are Sigung great magnum opus, his legacy. I feel weird even thinking about updating it.
Though for intellectual fun... As taming tiger with a string of beads is a soft-counter alternative to bar the big boss against a whirlwind kick, perhaps some other alternative soft-counters could include some Wing Choon flavored off angled footwork, and simultaneous attack and defense to avoid incoming force. I've found Bong sau so useful when incoming force overwhelms ones bridge by crossing the body, when Fred and I were having our sparring weekend I noticed that his black tiger punches would sometimes cross a bit and my single tigers would get worn out if I tried to lean that crossing-over force, so I would instinctively just let my arm fold into a bong sau and redirect the force off to the side and continue in.
this year's Summer Camp... a mixture of Chi Kung and Kung Fu...fundamentals (i.e. the important stuff)...practical, direct use ... in everyday life and martial application.
...old school hardcore...an opportunity to be excited and learn something useful. Almost a return to the way Sifu used to teach in the old days - with the benefit of 20 years more wisdom.
...hotels and B&B's get booked up early... get your room booked as early as you can... Sifu is staying at the Holiday Inn.
...Sifu s favourite courses each year...an opportunity to innovate (which he is doing again this year - distilling/refining - deeper rather than wider - no new sets to learn).
Sifu sharing his enthusiasm

Just a guess, likely wrong, but fun to try, and useful, too. Thanks, Tim Siheng!

That's a good question, Sihing!
I'm not really sure. I was thinking of how the Dragon Strength set changed from what Sifu originally learned to how he practices it now (and was taught to us). It really seemed to have morphed with Sifu's experiences and understanding of chi flow, internal force development and usage, and combat application. There also seemed to be a fairly high Tai Chi Chuan influence in the current Dragon Strength set. Or possible Dragon Strength influence in Sifu's Tai Chi Chuan?...
Anyway, I was thinking a similar morphing of combat sequences could happen. So, rather than Shaolin Kungfu sequences, Tai Chi sequences, Bagua sequences, Choy Li Futt sequences, Tan Tui sequences, etc. There might be some combined sequences that highlight the strengths of each style, as well as how to take advantage of specific style weakness/vulnerabilities.
Possibly -
1) Using Tai Chi and Bagua tactics to yield to, and then get to the back of, a pressing Shaolin Kungfu attack
2) Utilizing short, direct Hsing Yi techniques to counter long, circular Choy Li Futt techniques
3) Countering long-range kicking of Tan Tui with Dim Mak from the Dragon Strength set
We could have a series of Voltron sequences! (if that reference makes no sense, please disregard )
Interestingly Matt last year I did some training with my students where they put together a sparring set, combining skills and techniques from the various arts we have practiced. If I can find a video of it anywhere I’ll post it.

We have something very special for you.... a gift from Sifu. Something that will help you on the road to not only becoming quite good at Kung Fu, but great. Something Sifu will be teaching the skills of at the Summer Camp and something for you to practice!
When you watch it you may wonder... that’s it really... wonder!
So what is it?
Well here’s some clues;
Back to old school training... no new sets to learn... depth, not spread... Sifu has devised/refined something based on his evolved/developed/continued understanding... "I will post them", implying several things have been devised...

The video for combat sequence 2 is now ready for viewing on the Summer Camp website. You can see it here

There are 4 sequences to choose from. Each with its own flavour and style. It’s worth initially practicing each one to see which one best suits you. As mentioned before the aim is for you to pick one and practice this at least 30 times a day. When you arrive at the Summer Camp Sifu will then be able to spend more time working on helping you develop the skills to use this well in combat. Naturally, as is with all our Chi Kung and Kung Fu, there are other benefits too, besides fighting.
Let us know what sequence you are liking as we put them all up. Perhaps we will do a poll? What do you think?
