  • Resignation of Some Instructors

    Dear Family,

As you may have noticed, Sifu has posted an announcement regarding some recent resignations on his website.

I reproduce it here for our convenience [bold mine]:

A few of our certified instructors have resigned from our List of Certified Instructors. All of them, except one, have indicated their wish to remain as my students and have expressed their gratitude for my teaching.
The one exception publicly renounced me as his sifu. In my more than 30 years of teaching, this is the second time a student renounced me as his sifu. The first time happened about 30 years ago. But he did so quietly, without even giving his name. He wrote to me anonymously to say that he did not want to be my student.

Their resignation is because of their objection to the way I have handled accusations against one of our former instructors. The accusations have not been proven, but this does not mean that the accusations, or some of them, may not be true, though I believe they were not as serious as the resigned instructors imagined them to be.

This accused instructor resigned from our school on his own accord. Some instructors wanted me to publicly denounce him but I did not do so because I did not want to act as prosecutor, judge and executioner at the same time. Moreover, despite what the instructor who denounced me as his sifu, said in his website, I had only one piece of evidence; the rest was unproven accusations.

A traumatic woman told me that she had sexual relationship with the accused and she regretted it. My utmost thought at her confession was not to denounce the accused but to help her overcome her trauma and continue to live happily and confidently. Bringing out the issue in the open might cause her and other victims more traumatic pain. Moreover, I hoped the accused instructor might repent.

I valued forgiveness more than indignation, regardless of whether the accusations were true or not. I wanted the victims and any aggrieved persons to leave the past behind and move on, rather than clinch onto grudges and be miserable for life. I believed I handled the case quite well. The woman told me recently and personally, "I am very happy now." Indeed she looked happier and more beautiful than ever before. She is an inspiration for all of us.

All those who resigned had explicitly said that I had changed their lives, some mentioned that I had saved them. It is saddening that they resigned just because the accused recently attended my chi kung classes, invited by the organizer who did not know about the situation. But those who resigned had made their decision and I respect it, and wish them well.

I would take this opportunity to thank the many instructors and students in our school who have written to express support for my action. I would also like to clarify the position of students of the instructor who denounced me as his sifu. Those students who used to call me "sigung" should now call me "sifu" if they wish to learn from me, as their sifu, the person who denounced me as his teacher is no longer my student by his own choice. The students should continue to address this person as their "sifu", and I have no objection if they also continue to learn from him.

Loyal and Forgiving Sifu; Foolish Students

    Dear Family, Friends, Guests,

Personally I am very happy that Sifu has not denounced or banished the instructor in question on the basis of allegations and pressure from other instructors who feel they know better than Sifu. It shows great character, and I will explain why.

Though many people may renounce an associate, or employee, or student, in order to protect themselves, Sifu has been loyal and forgiving, though the (predictable?) result has been a public attempt to impugn his character.

Perhaps those who criticize Sifu should ask themselves how they would feel if they were accused of wrongdoing with little-to-no conclusive evidence, and then told they could no longer benefit from Sifu's wonderful teaching. I would be devastated. I know this instructor practically begged Sifu to let him continue to learn from him. In contrast, the recently resigned instructors practically throw away their chance to learn our precious arts, and all because Sifu did not respond in the way they thought appropriate. This to me is truly lamentable and foolish.

Sifu has made clear that sexual misconduct is wrong, especially between teacher and students. Sifu's refusal to prosecute the accused points to the great concern and care that Sifu has for all of us.

Sifu has said that only one piece of evidence was presented--a woman's testimony--and that very woman Sifu has helped personally to recover from whatever she went through. This points to the concern that Sifu has for any possible victims.

All of the resigned instructors have testified to the great benefits Sifu's teachings have brought them, and yet the one who once said he would probably be dead if it weren't for Sifu's teaching now repays Sifu's teaching with betrayal. I think it is a grotesque and terrible repayment for a precious gift.

    With Shaolin Salute,

    Charles

The destruction of the two Southern Shaolin Temples, from which we trace our lineage, was brought about through the action of trusted insiders. Those insiders honestly believed that their cause was just.

It is forgiveness and compassion not the desire of justice or revenge that allows the heart to open.

May all beings be happy, may all beings be free from suffering.

                Hi Arun,

Given that your link is to the public betrayal of our Sifu by yours, it is understandable why George Siheng would have felt it appropriate, as a moderator on our forum, to remove it. He probably considers your Sifu's words vile and repugnant, as do others in our school. But I will let my Siheng answer for himself.

Fortunately, there are very many beautiful and profound words of wisdom in that thread, penned by, among others, my Siheng, Sifu's own son, Wong Chun Nga, which paint a heartfelt and beautiful portrait of a great and caring Sifu. His words, below and in other posts, resonate so much contrast so strongly with your Sifu's ugly and profoundly distorted portrait, that Anthony himself thanks Chun Nga for his magnanimity. I will quote Chun Nga here as his words are so inspiring for the students in our school.

                I will call it

Portrait of a Deeply Caring Teacher

                Dear All,

I really feel sad when seeing all of you fighting to each other to judge who is doing right things or who is doing wrong things.

My tears come out from my heart, not come out from my both eyes. My body feel very cold because of my sadness seeing all my lovely brothers and sisters fighting to each other again and again, non-stop.

What is the main point brings up all those sadness into our lovely school Shaolin Wahnam. What is the point? I really don’t understand. I really don’t understand.

I rather my lovely school have a peace of mind and carry on with the practice past down from the past master rather than keep on arguing who is right or who is wrong.

Now my tears start coming down from my both eyes. I extremely sad inside my heart.

I was start joining this lovely school since 5 years old. Because I have no choice, my lovely father is the Grandmaster of the school. My first training is the stances training (Golden Bridge). My father set the rules for me, if I want to watch cartoon I must in stances training, otherwise no cartoon for me to watch. Right now when I thinking back my childhood, it was very lovely time for me compare to now, I have more lovely time spending together with my father. Event now I want to see my father also very hard, because most of his time in oversea.

When I was 13 years old, he started travelling out from Malaysia to teach the Shaolin Art. Every morning when I wake up, I really wish my father is beside me, but it won’t happen again. Only my moms who take good care 5 of us. If anything’s happen on us, there is no real man protecting the family.

My father spends most of his time to preserve the Shaolin Art for the next generation. His contribution can said no one of you can compare with him.

                1. He risks his life for travelling around the world, most of his life time in the plane (aircraft).

                2. He don’t care work until midnight just for all of you to read the Shaolin Wahnam website. Event sometimes I ask him sleep early, all the work can do it tomorrow, he respond to me, son (Chun Nga) people there are waiting for me to save his or her life, I must done it tonight for them. Hopefully after they read they have better life again.

                3. He didn’t blame anyone who taking his most time compare to spending the time with family members.

                4. When he feels sad, he never sounds out to the family members or students.

                5. When he feel hungry or tired because conduct too many classes, he never complain.

                6. When he speak until no voice during his teaching he never give up keep on speaking to the students.

                7. When he calling back home using skype I can see from his eyes his so miss his family members, he never gives up his job or duty for the students.

                8. When he walking alone and drive alone at oversea he never stops by his journey to reach the students destination or place.

                9. When the students dishonour to him, his tears just drop down inside his heart and never from his eyes.

                10. When students disagree on his point of view, he still smiling and explain it the best way he can.

                11. When any students or instructor betray him, he never get angry and some more still very caring of them who betray him.

What else you guys want from him (my father). Why keep on make your master or my father so sad. Did he deserve for all this sadness after he has contribute so much. Please ask your heart, is it this the only way you respecting your master or my lovely father.

Listen, for those who still want to keep on fighting for the justice, please leave the school immediately (Shaolin Wahnam), and don’t ever return back again. You do not deserve the Shaolin Arts. Shaolin Wahnam School is not the place for justice. I want PEACE, not fighting for justice.

                With Love,
                Wong Chun Nga.

                    Dear Charles Siheng,

Thank you for sharing your sentiment, very wise words.

Chun Nga Taisiheng's post is very touching.
It left me in a stillness.

I am very humled to be a student of Sifu,
following this emotional post from our Taisiheng, it is another big reason, to fully develop ourselves to our full potential,
wich our Sifu (Grandmaster), has so kindly set out and sacrificed for us to become.

As to the matter, yes, the resigned instructor(s) way of going out like this is sad, but like with everything,
it will only make us more a whole, and our school, stronger.

When we feel hurt, wronged or find ourselves in difficult positions, we don't get sick, nor blame anyone for any misfortune,
indeed we still stay healthy, happy, and strong, and full of vitality and energy. If anything, we grow from it and become stronger.
A true testament of our Shaolin Arts and Lineage.

Today is the shortest day of the year, and on the other side of the planet the longest, plus it's a new moon. Special times ahead.
And this week it's Christmas and then on to the New Year's.

                    Best wishes,
                    Tim

                      Dear Shaolin Wahnam family,

I was just a little boy when Sifu (my beloved father) established Shaolin Wahnam Institute. When I grow up and start to get know to some of his students, one question I often ask:" Why do you learn from Sifu but not others?"

The answers are varies, but all of them carry the same message:" Because Sifu is the best master I have met, not only in terms of Shaolin Arts, but also how to become a better, happier and healthier person......" I really enjoy listen to the stories tell by different students about how they found Sifu and finally learn from Sifu.

It is sad to know some instructors choose to resign due to difference opinions in handling some issues. Not all, but I still remember the stories of most of them, the path for them to reach Sifu. And now, they choose a different path, although Sifu saved or changed most of their life, which they expressly mentioned to me.

I totally believe that Sifu tries to handle the issues at the best he could, and with the way he thinks is the best. I fully support whatever decision made by Sifu, and will stance behind Sifu for any order at this time.

Lastly, I would like to wish those who choose to leave our school all the best, as what my beloved father taught me - forgiveness.

                      With Shaolin salute and respect,

                        Greetings to Shaolin Wahnam members

Hello this is Steven. I like to present my thoughts on this. I am shocked of the actions of the resigned instructors as well and talked to Sifu Michael about this. Also I think of this event as an opportunity to learn from this situation. It is often said that disasters is a prime opportunity to improve ourselves. I often felt that justice and revenge are two sides of the same coin. Different context, same essence. Both of which does not lead to a healing of parties affected by a unfortunate event. In the end I hope that all grudges will be let go.

                          Dear Family,

Grandmaster Wong has responded to the current smear campaign being orchestrated against him by Anthony Korahais. Please refer to the front page of www.shaolin.org for his response.

Grandmaster Wong has also asked for his response to be posted here on the open forum. Here it is.

                          AN ANALYSIS OF ANTHONY'S CAMPAIGN

Here is an analysis of Anthony Korahais' campaign at http://flowingzen.com/14351/why-i-le...fter-17-years/ which will give insight to the issue.

People are misled to believe I am the wrongdoer. The name of the wrongdoer is not mentioned, but mine is. The focus of the campaign is how evil I have been.

There is no attempt to identify the wrongdoer. Anthony has declared he is not going to bring the case to court. The campaign does not help to prevent similar events happening again. There is also no attempt to help the victims. Indeed the campaign may revive the traumatic pains that the victims may have previously overcome.

To Anthony and those who resigned as instructors over this matter, the "wrong" that I have done is that I did not publicly renounce the accused, but I am made to appear as if I condoned sexual abuse despite the fact that I have mentioned many times that I don't. Anthony's statement that I have all the evidence is not true.

The only evidence that I can confirm is a woman who confessed to me. All the rest is unproven accusations. I have also stated that though the accusations are unproven, it does not mean they may not be true.

The reasons why I did not publicly denounce the accused are as follows:

                          1. I did not, and still do not, have sufficient evidence. I did not want to act as prosecutor, judge and executioner all in one person based only on accusations.
                          2. Bringing the issue into the open would adversely affect the victims, who probably did not want their affairs to be publicized.
                          3. I wanted to give the accused another chance. I hoped he would change, irrespective of the accusations which had yet to be proven.

Anthony is now teaching as his livelihood the very arts he has learned from me. He also often mentioned that I had saved his life. Publicly renouncing one's sifu is bad enough. Running a campaign to smear the sifu who saved his life is far worse.

Anthony's motives for running this campaign may be interpreted differently by different people, but it is a clear example of repaying kindness with vengeance.

Originally there was a long list of comments following Anthony's post, including a courageous victim who described how my teaching had helped her overcome her trauma and lamented that Anthony was steering people away from me. Anthony has taken out the comments. The early comments praised Anthony for his action. The later comments raised the issue of Anthony betraying me, his teacher who saved his life. I would take the opportunity here to thank all those who, on their own accord, have spoken kindly for me.

It is shocking that by his own admission Anthony has been sick, his financial situation deteriorates and his married life strained during the two years he preoccupies himself with these accusations when he is teaching an art that is meant to give good health, good luck and happiness. From the chi kung perspective, the main cause is that Anthony's heart is blocked by vengeance.

Christmas is a time for forgiveness besides rejoicing. Everyone, including Anthony, has a choice. Block the heart with vengeance and indignation, or forgive and be compassionate and open the heart to blessings of good health, good luck and happiness. There are many beautful things in life than clinching to grudges in the heart.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to Everyone.

                          Grandmaster Wong Kiew Kit,

It's silly to "dis-own" your sifu in the current context where Sifu have doubts on misconduct by one of the instructors, hence is reluctant to take punitive action. The " beyond reasonable doubt" test is very important here for a grandmaster. I just cannot believe there are so many senior instructors withdraw themselves in support of Anthony, without due regard, and respect to sifu. Were there really no other better options?
Even if Sifu makes a poor decision, you may not be in the position to question his integrity. As in this case the accused instructor is wholly responsible for the deeds, if any. Sifu must be fair to all, to both the accused and said victim. Until conclusive evidence is available , we will have to be neutral, and have to make hard decisions, as explained by Sifu. ( also helped victim to recover her balance)

Sifu have said" there is a fine line between appearances and reality" that we should give in to the benefit of doubt and not jump into conclusions, where by we missed the good opportunities by taking a preamptive stance through a negative action.
What about zen, spiritual development? Why are these instructors so troubled? Is it the flag waving in the air or is it their mind that is moving?

Best regards to Sifu, our teacher.
