"Ten Thousand Miles Without a Cloud" (Sun Shuyun)
ISBN: 0007129742
Not a review, but a quick mention.
I had been recommended this book by my girlfriend and, having read it, I now recommend it to you.
The author follows the journey of the monk Xuanzang (AKA Hiuen Tsang) from China to India and back again. It took him (I think) 18 years and it took the author 2 years.
Both of them travel in search of understanding about the true meaning of Buddhism. Xuanzang was not satisfied with the quality of translated materials available in China at the time and decided to fix this, whereas the author was brought up during the Cultural Revolution with the resulting spiritual emptiness.
Just to give an example of Xuanzang importance - it was only thanks to his "Record of the Western Regions" that Buddhism was re-discovered in India in the last 150 years or so.
I really enjoyed this book, but I'm too lazy to write a detailed review.
