  • The Essence and Applications of Taijiquan

    Hi,
Having heard so much about Louis Swaim's translation of Yang Cheng Fu's book and how well researched it was, I just couldn't resist getting a copy.

What I like about the translation is not the translation itself but Louis' comments. He researched other works by Yang Cheng Fu , Zheng Man Qing, Yang Zhenji, Yang Zhenduo, Xu Yusheng (and others) to help provide addtional insights into YCF's work. These commentaries would be something that the original chinese book lacked.

It's interesting to compare YCF's form in the written word to what is being taught. An example is the beginning form. There is no mention of raising the arms. According to Louis investigation, Xu YuSheng's 1921 book also lack a description of raising the arms, indicating perhaps that raising the arms in the beginning form was either optional or something added subsequent to 1934.

Another interesting bit are the pictures. It's funny seeing pictures of giant YCF pusing hands with his skinny son Yang Sau Chung.
