Hi brothers and sisters, its been a long time.

Lately I have been having a very bad problem. I caught some kind of skin infection. I went to my doctors and its believed that when I got these bug bites 6 months ago, I had an huge alergic reaction and because I kept scratching it for 2 months, I caught some kind of infection.

They did all these testing but everything came up negative. According to the test, I am healthy. But in the mean time I have these sores all over my arms and my legs. I got these antibiotics and worked well the first time. I was almost completely cured and I was suppose to go back to the doctor for further evulation. But because of my health insurrance issues, I couldn't go for a while. Then when I finally got another insurance, I had to go to a clinic. But by then my infection got much worst and its been very troubleing since then. They have been giving me more test and more medications and now I am back to the orginal antibiotic.

I have been healing but there are patches of sores that don't seem to heal much. Its very itchy and theres discharge. It seems to spread through touch. Although lately the antibiotics seems to have stop the spread.

Even though it did stop the spread, I am very cautious and I try not to touch my face. At the end of a chi session where we are suppose to rub our eyes and face, is there anything else I can do or skip it all together?

Its been 6 months of agony so I would appericate any input.

    Thank you

Sorry to hear of your on-going issues. The facial massage has, of course, a purpose. That is why it is included. However, if you NEED to avoid contact with your face, don't worry unnecessarily about missing this out.

This is in line with the motto "practice as best you can according to the instructions".

As soon as you can, put the facial massage back into your practice.

      Thank you Andrew.

I had a few more problems with the doctors again. I missed my appointment by accident and because they are so booked, I can't see them for 2 weeks. But unfortunately it started to flare up again and it seems that it is becomeing antibiotic resistant. It is very hard to deal with and is started to break my concentration. Its been very hard to do chi kung lately.

Right now I'm trying to see if I can go to the emergency room if its not life threating. But I'm just not sure what to do right now as its really been taking a toll on me mentally. Is there anything you suggest?

        Dr Tran,
You can try the facial massage without your hands making contact with your face, a few centermeters away. The Chi will bridge the space.

If you were, Tran, I'd get you to come and see me. You are fortunate, though, because 2 Chi Kung instructors and trained Chi Kung Healers are in NY -- Sifu Eugene Siterman and Sifu Mark Blohm. I would suggest you contact and see one of them as soon as possible. I think Mark may be easier to find time with as I know Eugene does travel quite a bit at times.

            Temporary Rash : Cleansing Manifestation

            Dear Dr.Tran ,

Sorry to hear of your situation . Since you are a regular Shaolin Chi Kung practitioner , the rash is most probably a manifestation of cleansing ( this is why medical tests were negative and the doctors said you are healthy , usually you will be diagnosed as suffering from some allergy of unknown cause ) which will eventually clear resulting in new layer of healthy skin and higher level of overall health .My brothers in this forum , Emanuel Kissey and x-men9999 , had similar experience as yours and are now well : you may send PM to them for reassurance.

My advise as longtime chi kung practitioner and medical doctor :

            1) Do not worry because the rash is not life threatening , not contagious , is temporary and will heal soon.

            2) Continue your twice daily chi kung practise : you may complete the exercise mentally ( think of the dantian and gentle thought of facial massage ) or complete as Steve Clark suggested ( chi massage ) or do the actual physical facial/point massage if you are comfortable with it .

            3) Drink enough warm H2O to promote detox. It is OK to use western medications for symptom relief ( ointments / soaks / tablets for the itch or oozing ) or antibiotics ( topically or orally) for secondary infection. In my brothers' exeprience , a diluted KMnO4 ( pottasium permanganate prescribed by GP ) soak has been very effective to keep the oozing rash dry and reduce itch .A vigorous chi flow massaging the skin can be an effective alternative to scratching for severe itch, try it.

            4) Do not use concentrated/perfumed soap or abrasives / coarse sponges on the rash during bath as it may delay the physical skin healing.

            5) For now : use loose airy clothings made of natural fabrics . Avoid tight clothings / foot wear . In privacy at home with good ventilation/air conditioning , you can be bare .

Do not Worry , Enjoy your exercise and you will attain Higher level of Health after the detoxifying rash .

Best wishes in Life and in Shaolin ,

                Thank Damian for your imput.

My grandmother just died a few days ago so its a very tough time for me. Thats why I didn't respond before.

Sadly I know that it is not cleansing. I am embarassed and ashamed to say but I haven't been praticeing consistanly for a while now. Without daily pratice I don't believe that I am at a level where I am cleansing.

The infection is a very long story. It started around the first week of January of this year. I went to Hondoras for a marine biology class. When I was there I got bitten many times from sandflies. When I had came back home they became welts on my arms, back, and legs. It was intensely itchy. Way more than anything I had ever felt. So I kept scratching. About a mont afterwards, all the scratching caused me to start getting scabs that just kept spreading to all the bites I had. It became bad and I knew it was not normal.

So I went to a specialist on tropical diseases and a dermatolagist. Which then I found out it wasn't any tropical disease but some kind of infection. I was giving an antibiotic and which it worked. I was almost completely cured. I was suppose to go back but then my insurance expried. By then all my scabs disapeared and I was mostly fine. Except it was still itchy.

I had to get another insurance which was a very low quality insurance and took lots of time just to get seen by the doctor. Which took about a month. By then my infection started to spread again and it was all coming back. They took more test this time and more biospies. I had to wait 3 weeks before they would see me again. By this time I am in even more suffering. To which I had terrible sores that had large amounts of discharge.

This is about 5 and a half months after it first started. I finally got some more antibiotics and a shot of cortisone which worked well. I was healing but very slowly. But I miss my appointment by accident which I tried to explain to them that I needed urgent care. However, due to the fact that it is a clinic and not a private doctor, it was terrible service and I had to wait 2 weeks before I could see a doctor. During that time it seems my antibiotics stoped helping me. It started to get worst and I'm starting to have discharge. Also it spreads through touch and from contact with the discharge. It has been spreading on my body lately.

Its been a very long and terrible ordeal. It feels like just pure agony for all these months. They gave me every test possible now, cultures, biopsies, x rays, blood test, and stool samples. I am healthy according to the test.

At this point its believed that I had a huge allergic reaction to the bites and from scraching it so much I caught an infection. It is probally a staff infection and most likely MRSA. But they won't treat me for that until they can culture it on a dish.

I am ashamed to say that I haven't been praticing and I only come now in a time of need. But I hope that I can try some chi to help heal and cure this. I am sorry if I don't sound rational. Right now it is hard to think straight from having agony from this infection and dealing with my loss. So I appoligize if I do not sound rational and if my post is difficult to read.

                Thank you for your time.

                  Dear Dr.Tran ,

Sincere condolence regarding your grandmother .

Regarding you , a good student will stand up again after a fall : so do the right thing ,ie (1) re- continue your chi kung practise regardless whether the rash is due to cleansing , allergy , infection or unknown cause , as chi kung will be benificial for all ailments (2) follow up with your western trained physician (3) see brother instructors near your area .

Best wishes in Life and in Shaolin .

                    Thank you Damian.

I didn't respond for a while because my life was just going downhill. After my grandmother died, I lost my job from being sick for so long. I had so many hospital bills to pay for that I just couldn't compensate the instructors for their help. So I did not seek them out.

Lucky I kept on praticing chi and which gave me back some mental clarity. Then at a point I started to get better on chi alone and not the antibiotics.

Finally they figured out by chance that I had a staff infection by giving me the right medication in their last effort. I was giving a strong stringent that gave me back my life.

Although even after all this time Im not fully recovered. I still get small bumps which that the doctor tells me its ezema although it seems to me like early stages of the infection. Which it does get infected. Lately I been treating it by putting antibacterial cream or the stringent on it which helps it alot.

Hopefully I can get back to normal soon by praticing chi more consistanly than in the past.

Thank you for listening to me and offering your advice.

I know this is an extremely old thread but I just wanted to update a few things.

This was an extremely tough time for me and it took me a few years to completely recover. My skin was in a dire state, my grandma died and when I got better I tore my knee and needed surgery. Because I didn't know what had affected my skin, I kept myself in isolation so that I don't spread it to my friends or anyone else. The isolation truly affected my mental state.

But I did practice chi kung and I focused a lot on meditation to make myself a better man. In the end it turns out it was a minor infection but I had a over zealous inflammation response and because of the healthcare I got, it only got worst and worst until likely one day the hospital got a team of doctors to help me out. Unfortunately, as soon as I got better I tore my knee shortly afterwards.

But chi kung helped me a lot. In the end, when ever I did chi, the inflammation didn't get any more worst and at least contained the disease. It no longer spread as long as I kept up the practice. Then after surgery, I healed a lot faster due to my practice. Because of this huge turmoil, I fell into a crippling depression. Thanks to my practice and meditation, it no longer affects me. I still have to work on my knee but all in all, I am much better now.

This experience however, taught me a lot and I practice a lot more now and I truly focus on meditation now. It was a tough lesson but at least now I'm a better student.

I'm about to start another chapter in my life and I am forever grateful for all the things chi kung has taught me and everyone's words here.

Thank you for everyone's kind advice and well wishes.
