"…a clown in family funeral being attacked by angry dogs..."

Sorry. I prefer an integral life, in which all adequate emotions are welcome. Happiness is just one of many, but I want to live a life where adequate sadness, adequate rage, adequate fear have their right place, too. Happiness has been oversold in some way as the only “good” emotion to pursue.

And sorry again for explaining my metaphor, which usually dries it out and defeats its purpose…

I do not know whether the following is a metaphor:

"A piece of bread is better than complete happiness."

Do you believe in the above statement?
                If yes, please explain.

Depends on if you're hungry or not.

I agree too - imagine how frustrated and confused you'd be if you were never allowed to be angry or sad.

                        Variety of Emotions

                        Dear Sifu Piti,

By "Living a happy life" I do not mean "A life in which the only emotion experienced is happiness"

Such a life would be a bit strange perhaps, if not boring. The many types of emotions that we experience in life are wonderful, and I wouldn't want to eliminate any particular emotion.

Is there another emotion you would choose to pursue?

Or were you just suggesting that emotions other than happiness are good as well?

                        Smiling,

                          Thanks, Erica, for your response.

Now, it's time to talk a little more about this:

                          In simple algebra, when a > x whereas x > y, it follows then that a > y. Right?

Now, please consider the following two sentences:

Nothing is better than complete happiness.
A piece of bread is better than nothing.

Then, can we derive that "A piece of bread is better than complete happiness"?

                          Smiling, too,
                          Joko

PS. Hi Chris (cnholmes), what do you think of it?

I think we are more at peace when we bend with the flow of life. And perhaps bending sometimes means feeling the negative emotions connected with where the flow has taken us.

If you refuse to face the pain of a painful event, and try and force yourself to be happy... I think in a way you're not letting the blockage be cleared. You're pushing against it, and maybe even building it up in the process. Kind of like keeping something in until one day you just explode because you've never faced the problem and it's finally grown too big to hide.

Whereas if you let the painful emotion just flow, you can understand it, and return to happiness faster

It makes me think of a quote I came across today...

"The pessimist complains about the wind. The optimist expects the wind to change. A leader adjusts the sails."

                            I'm floating down a river
Oars freed from their holes long ago
Lying face up on the floor of my vessel
                            I marvel at the stars
                            And feel my heart overflow

                              Nice play on words.

Perhaps if you're hungry enough, a piece of bread is complete happiness.

                                A similar quote:

"A pessimist sees the the cup of coffee as half empty. An optimist sees the cup of coffee as half full. A person smiling from the heart picks up the cup, smells the delightful aroma, and takes a sip."
