  • Ghostbusting: How to deal with a spirit in your home.

    Hi everyone.

This subject has come up several times via email, so I decided to tackle it in public with a short article. If you do not believe in ghosts or spirits, that's fine. This article is not for you. But if you're like me and you've had an undeniable experience with a ghost, then this article will be of interest.

    My Ghost Story

Back in 2001, I had a spirit or a ghost in my apartment (that's a "flat" for you Brits out there). I later learned that the previous tenant had died in my apartment shortly before I moved in. This gentleman had lived in my (his?) apartment for 30 years. I had been there for about 3 months.

I had just returned from a trip to Malaysia, and my mind was extremely clear. While in Malaysia, I had had my first "satori," or a glimpse of cosmic reality. It was mid-Winter when I returned to New York City, so I had to practice inside my apartment.

That's when I started to notice something strange. Every time I practiced in my apartment, I felt something as soon as I attained a chi kung state of mind. At first, I didn't know what it was, and just ignored it. But soon, it became impossible to ignore.

It quickly became clear that there was something in the apartment. I felt a definite presence. At times, I felt a chill sweep by me. Other times, I had a distinct feeling that this presence was trying to communicate with me (I'm not sure, my guess is that he didn't know that he was dead and therefore saw me as an intruder). None of these sensations occurred when I went to my girlfriend's apartment to practice (which I started doing more and more often!).

I should mention that, prior to this experience, I didn't believe in ghosts. Far from it. When I read about such things in Sifu's books, I just skimmed over those sections. Or when friends would tell me about their own experiences with ghosts, I would just scoffed at the stories. But it's difficult to scoff at your own direct experience.

    The Solution

Anyway, I was desperate for a solution, so I wrote to Sifu about my situation. He kindly responded to me within 2 days. Here is the advice that Sifu gave me:

This spirit is trying to make contact with you, despite your strong chi that actually repels spirits, because it wants to seek your help. You would acquire blessings if you can help this spirit, but there is no obligation to help if you find it is beyond your capability.

First, I wish to teach you a mantra that will give you calm and protection. The mantra is as follows:

"Namo Guan Shi Yin Bodh Satt"

Repeat this mantra in your heart, softly or aloud three times or nine times or continuously as many times as you wish.

The mantra means "Paying Homage to Bodhisattva Guan Shi Yin". Bodhisattva Guan Shi Yin is the Bodhisatta of Great Compassion, and is my personal Bodhisattva. A Bodhisattva is a very highly developed spiritual being, many levels above gods.

Irrespective of whether you perceive the needs or perform the help, tell the spirit that there is a beautiful, happy place called the Western Paradise where it may go to if it receives help from Amitabha Buddha by sincerely and repeatedly chanting the following mantra:

    "Namo Amitabha Buddha"

    Best regards,

    Sifu
At the time, I had no idea how these mantras might work. I just did as Sifu told me to do. Even now, I don't pretend to fully understand what happened. All I know is that it worked. The spirit (or ghost, or whatever) that had been giving me grief for weeks was gone within a day.

Here are some additional "tricks" I've learned over the years to help cleanse your house of bad energy and/or spirits. I didn't learn these from Sifu, but they work well.
    1. Line a bowl with aluminum foil and fill it with 1 cup rubbing alcohol and 1 cup sea salt. Light the mixture on fire (carefully!) and let it burn (carefully!) in the room you wish to cleanse.
    2. Burn some sage in the room. Sage is known to help clear bad energy. Move the sage around the room so that the smoke reaches all corners.
I hope this article helps in some way. Please feel free to share your own experiences here, or to post questions and comments.

    May all beings find peace,

    Namo Amitabha Buddha

You can read about my experience as well. I used this same advice to solve my ghost problem, and it also led me in a new spiritual direction.

Siheng, thank you for relaying this information to me when I needed it. Sifu, thank you for helping us in so many ways.

"Then how could chi kung overcome diseases where the cause is unknown or when there is no cure? The question is actually incorrect. The expressions "the cause is unknown" and "there is no cure" are applicable only in the Western medical paradigm. The expressions no longer hold true in the chi kung paradigm. In the chi kung paradigm the cause is known, and there is a cure."

It's amazing, how many times you can go to Sifu with an unusual question, and Sifu goes "oh yes.....you can do this, and this, oh and this along with that" etc.

So much experience, that's why he's our Sifu

Thank you Sifu, and thank you Anthony Sihing for sharing those practical pieces of advice.

        good intentions

This is one of my own ghostly experiences. I accept that some might find it a little far fetched, but there ya go.
I have had several experinces with ghosts throughout my life and have had some success (and failure) in helping them move on. My current home is an old church and there have been quite a few visitors. One of the most memorable was a woman who had some hostile intentions towards me. The big warning sign was when I noticed that I kept getting pushed or tripped on the stairs going up to my bedroom.
I called my family to the spot and we all noticed a cold area and my father was able to sense a spirit. I was later able to communicate with her and discovered that she had a grievance with another spirit that was also in the house. It was very crowded! I managed to speak with this second spirit and encouraged him to depart. He was desperate to leave but needed help to break free. My family and I all prayed for him. As a result of this prayer, a 'higher' being quickly came to our assistance and took him away. The female spirit refused to leave though. We should have left it there and jsut left her alone but we didn't.
Instead we made the mistake of attempting to force her out.
She fought us with surprising strength. During the struggle I personally felt as though a great claw was trying to pull the top of my head off. My father woke the next morning with scratches on his arms and chest. It was obvious that the tough approach was not going to work. So instead I began to do what I should have done all along. I treated her with kindness. I began to talk out loud when walking up the stairs, assuring her that I meant no harm and that I would leave her alone. I also began to train harder in my qigong practise. I gradually noticed that the pushes on the stairs became less frequent. I have since had several breakthroughs in my training and my heart is far more open. I have not had any pushes from her in several months and I think she has now gone. I believe that the change in my own energy has somehow helped her to free herself.
I feel the main thing to remember when dealing with ghosts is that when we help them to move on, we do so for their own benefit, not ours. I made the mistake of simply wanting her out of my home and I was prepared to fight for that. This was of course an entirely selfish attitude. It took a change of my heart to see that the only reason to engage in 'Ghostbusting' is to help the ghost, not ourselves.
        Alex.

Here's a guide to the spiritualists' method of spirit rescue.

            spirit rescue

When I was working as a healer in a spiritualist church the person I was healing was attacked by black magic. The force was quite incredible and frightening. My hands were being forced away from my patient, who began to talk nonsense then to scream. The doors of the church blew open, then slammed shut, and I panicked. Fortunately one of the other healers was experienced in both spirit rescue and dealing with black magic, and she managed to calm everybody, and do a cleansing.

              Hi Guys,

SiGung's advice is, of course, excellent And to be honest the best I've ever heard offered - offering a spirit a good place to go and a way to get there other than just 'helping them on' is truly wonderful and I shall be using that myself from now on

I also was really touched by the clarity of what Alex said, in his whole thread but inparticular:

Originally posted by Alex McArdell View Post

I think this is of paramount importance when experiencing such things.

Of course there are spirits who need help, some that you just need to leave alone and let pass by like anyone else walking by in the street, and there are also spirits who are just 'other' and not nice... I'd like to point you to a thread written a little while ago:

I also found Anthony Sipak's other room/apartment cleansing methods interesting, I've not heard of the foil and rubbing alcohol one before, I shall have to ask around about that one Utilising sage for cleansing goes across all manor of cultures and these days is commonly referred to as Smudging. White Sage in particular is very effective. It's also common place to start at the farthest part of the room/apartment/house and work your way to a back door or open window using a 'sweeping' type motion as you go to sweep the bad energy along and out. If you're in a house, the farthest part would be ideally a place you could start and make a spiral in your path leading to your back door, just like we use spiral methodology in our KungFu

              I hope this helps

Could you please give an example of a rubbing alcohol.
                Thanks,

If you're wondering where to get it, I don't know about Australia, but here in the UK I would imagine it's the sort of thing you could go and ask a pharmacist for

I once tried, but did not get very far.

You can apparently source some 95% etc ethanol in specialist alcohol shops in Soho - Polish Pure comes to mind.

Isopropyl alcohol should not be hard to find, folks. In the US, you can buy it in grocery stores, pharmacies, drug stores, and convenience stores.

Or is this all some sort of strange Brit humor?

As far as I know, on this side of the pond you are limited to electronic supplies shops (as aerosol) or eBay. :-/

It is a lot easier to buy online, but not quite so easy to find in shops. They also don't sell guns quite so openly here.

                            Yes, it's "dry" British humour.

The drinks George is referring to are a little like absinthe - drinking absinthe inspired Van Gogh to paint the image above - and cut off an ear!

IPA is also limited here in Switzerland. It is highly combustible and can be explosive depending on its use. Rubbing alcohol, though (I believe) could possibly be bought at a veterinary's practice --- especially if they treat larger animals.
