I'm trying to figure out what it means. Here's my translation:

    Si4 shi4 si4 (Four is a temple,)
    Shi2 shi4 shi2 (Ten is food,)
    Shi2si4 shi4 shi2si4 (But fourteen is fourteen)
    Si4shi2 shi4 si4shi2 (And forty is forty)

Lian gong bu lian quan gong fu qi2 quan

Learning "force"(?) without techniques results in incomplete kungfu

Hey, maybe we should start a thread on famous wulin sayings....

                Ah. Simplified. So it's:

                练功不练拳功夫不齊全

                  練拳不練功到老一場空
                  練功不練拳功夫不齊全

Here's my attempt at a translation:

If you only practice technique without training force, you can practice until you're old but your art will still be empty. If you only train force without practicing technique, then your skills will not be complete.

Hey Wuji, good idea! I was searching through Sifu's Q&A for kungfu tenets and managed to collect a few but when I got a new machine at work, I think I lost them

                      Ni3 zao3, Jeff, (it's 10 am here )

I learnt the same thing this week! (It was the third course)

                      The teacher taught it as
                      4 is 4
                      10 is 10
                      14 is 14
                      40 is 40

But it was longer, as there was all the possible combination:
                      4 is not 14
                      14 is not 40
                      ... (!)

Needless to say I was incapable of pronouncing it correctly.

Don't worry - I am a native speaker and I had problems myself. I still do depending on the speed I am expected to rattle it off.

You can try this in french (for fun) :
                          "les chaussettes de l'archiduchesse sont-elles seches, archi-seches?"

I've heard the "4 is 4" tongue twister too

Along with "forty four stone lions". Which I can't remember in Chinese.

                              Chris.
