  • Special Weapons Course: 10 Questions to Grandmaster Wong

    Dear Shaolin Family,

I am delighted to announce that Sifu has very kindly accepted to answer 10 questions about weapons both in preparation for the upcoming Special Weapon's Course this March 2015 and for posterity

We only have 10 chances so it is important that we ask illuminating questions.

So let's have fun and jump right in

I'm asking the first two questions:

    1. Is there a specific essence to each Shaolin weapon and if yes, what is the specific essence for each weapon that is going to be taught at the Special Weapon's Course?

    2. What are the considerations for the length of a sabre so that it can be most effective in combat?

    Best regards,
    Claude

    Dear Sifu,

I have always been fascinated by both Shaolin knights and European knights. Hence my question:
Could you compare the philosophy, form, skill and application of typical Shaolin weapons with weapons used by typical 12th century European knights (for instance knights Templar?)

    Best wishes,

      Weapons and Golden Bell

Thank You Sifu and Brother Claudien for allowing this opportunity

Question : Is the methodology to acquire Golden Bell for withstanding weapons attack ( cutting , slicing ,piercing , dotting etc ) similar against unarmed attacks ( strikes, kicks, qinna ,dim mak etc ) but takes a longer time to achieve ? And presumably there are also Bell-breaking skills-techniques using weapons as in unarmed combat .

Best wishes to Sifu , all members of Shaolin Wahnam School and all friends in this new year 2015 and always

        Sifu,

I would like to ask about the weight of weapons in training and combat application. For instance, I've seen kungfu staff sets practiced with a heavy cast iron staff, and the original guan dao is reputedly a very heavy weapon.

Can you tell more about the weight of various weapons as they were used by the past masters? What would be the benefits of training with various heavy weapons (intrinsically heavy or purposefully made so), and using a heavy weapon in combat?

          Dear Shaolin Wahnam Family,

I would like to thank Sifu for answering another amazing Question & Answer Series and to Claudien Sifu for starting this thread. :-)

          Sifu, I would kindly ask:

          - Could you please share which one is your favourite weapon and why?

          - Could you please share which weapon you consider the best and why?

With Love, Care and Shaolin Salute,

              Dear Claude,

              Thanks for this opportunity!

              Dear Sifu,

Thanks for offering this outstanding and rare Course.

              May I ask:

              - What are the benefits and advantages in daily life of training classical weapons?

              - What does training weapons add to one's martial development, especially in contrast to other arts and sports that do not include weapons?

                Dear Sifu,

Thank you for another wonderful opportunity to ask questions!
And thank you Claude Siheng for utilizing the thread!

                - What are the animal spirit characteristics of each weapon?
Which are therefore the recommended weapon sets for our unarmed specializations?
(Like which weapon suits a Tiger-Crane, Dragon Strength, Taming Tiger, Triple Stretch, Monkey, ... specialist?)

                - Sifu has learned a lot of weapon sets. Why did Sifu decide on the ones in our standard syllabus?

I’m looking forward to the answers of the very good questions we already have.

                Best wishes,

Dear Claudien, thank you for starting this thread.
                  I'd like to ask Sifu:

                  - When choosing a weapon of choice to practice with and dedicate to, is there some things to consider to attain the best results? (For example size of the practitioner and weapon, the weight, the applications to practitioners training..etc)

                  - Can one use the skills we just learned at the Dragon Strength course with weapons? What would be the best choice of weaponry?
Is it possible to apply Dim Mak with a weapon?
How could this benefit the practitioner?

                  Thank you.

                  Gratefully,
