I use this version edited by Hilmar Klaus, which was recommended to me.
It contains:
The Chinese text (including versions where they exist.
Pinyin transcription
English and German literary (verbatim) translation
English and German analogous (interpreted) translation
an index
an extensive bibliography
There is an online version here: http://www.tao-te-king.org/
I don't know how good the translations are. I like the verbatim translation because it gives me an idea of what the Chinese text is like...

Weekend Classes in other Swiss locations
This might be the best translation to get started.
- The translation can be read comfortably, yet is not over poetic. I find the explanations very helpful. And there is also a good introduction.
There is an online version of the translation here: http://www.taoism.net/ttc/complete.htm
The Taoist Classics, Volume 1: The Collected Translations of Thomas Cleary (Taoist Classics (Shambhala)) Paperback
- I bought this one because of the Wen-tzu which is also part of the collection. The translation of the Tao Te Ching seems to be very interpreted and different from other translations. Not sure I would recommend it.
Happy exploration

I will get for myself the version/translation of Ralph Alan Dale, with photographs/drawings by John Cleare. I simply liked it and it was a good and nice feeling when I touched it and held it in my hands.
I am sure you will find the one that suits you the best.
I have mine, too.
Read it for the first time about 9 years ago.
Interpreted into Indonesian, with comments from the writer/translator, for every sentence.

Be joyful, ..and share your joy with others -(Anand Krishna)
I recently came upon a translation by Stephen Mitchell at the library, and later found it to be the version recommended on Eckhart Tolle's website. Its style is totally different from another translation I have.
A personal favorite:
Ch. 78
Nothing in the world
is as soft and yielding as water.
Yet for dissolving the hard and inflexible,
nothing can surpass it.
The soft overcomes the hard;
the gentle overcomes the rigid.
Everyone knows this is true,
but few can put it into practice.
Therefore the Master remains
serene in the midst of sorrow.
Evil cannot enter his heart.
Because he has given up helping,
he is people greatest help.
