well, other Baak Mei lineages say differently, but anyway, virtually all traditional Chinese styles are kind of "MMA"

White Crane, Wing Chun, Hung Ga and Karate

In the Ching dynasty, there was a gungfu master, whose job was an armed escort service bodyguard. He was betrayed and killed by one of his best students. His daughter has run away, and went into the hidding, mourning her father, being depressed and sad, crying all the time. One night, a white crane ascended from the sky, and turned himself into an old man, Immortal White Crane (Baak Hok Sin Si). He has taught her the secret art of Tit Sin Kyun to the girl. It is said that this set has still a lot of the emotions (sadness, fear and worry).

          Dear Sifu Macek,

Thank you for sharing the story of Master Lau Jaam. I love hearing real life Kungfu stories. I find them a joy to listen to, very inspiring and motivating. One of my favourite part of the story so far is this part:

“You said you had learnt some, while I do not know your standard. as now we’re master and disciple, as a matter of fact, I’ll teach all I have, I need to test you for 2 reasons: First, to know your weak points, second to evaluate whether or not I’m qualified as your teacher.“

Lau though repeatedly said:“ I dare not impolite“ but in heart, excited to have chance to compete. In just a few moves Lau realised that he stood no chance,so he was ready to drop all his prior martial art studies and fully focus on the teachings of his new sifu. He never complained about hard times and never got tired.
No ego, supreme confidence, sincere intentions for his student. Masterful.

          Best wishes

          Martin

Shaw Bros Stars Performing Some Choy Li Fut Applications

Digging through my archive, i have found an interesting old magazine devoted solely the art of Choy Li Fut (Choi Lei Fat). Late Alexander Fu Sheng and Chi Kuan-Chun - legendary duo of Shaw Brothers Studios - on the cover and few applications inside: "Covering Hand, Tiger Claw vs. Bail the Moon from the Bottom of the Sea" and "Double Flying Butterfly Palms".

Interview With Wing Chun Grandmaster Yip Man from an old Kung Fu magazine

Wing Tsun style is quite different from the Weng Chun style. In Hong Kong, the leader of the Wing Tsun clan is Grandmaster Yip Man, whereas the leader of the Weng Chun clan is Grandmaster Chu Chung Man. The techniques and boxing sets are also quite different. For example, in the Wing Tsun system there are kungfu sets such as Siu-Nim-Tau, Chum-Kiu, Biu-Tze, Wooden Dummy and the Six-&-a-half Long Pole Techniques. However, in Weng Chun, there are Wooden dummy, Bart-Mo-Dan-Da or “Eight-Single-Fighting-Ways”, Lin-Wan-Kou-Da or “Chain-Punches with Trapping Hands”, as well as the Six-&-a-half Long Pole Techniques.

Many thanks for posting this interview. Apart from the general information, the following quote is quite relevant to Shaolin Wahnam:
In olden days, people were very strict concerning the teacher/student relationship. Before they admitted a student, they had to know the character of this would-be student very clearly. This is what is called ‘to choose a right student to teach’. Secondly, it also depended on whether the student could afford to pay his school fees or not.

                        To continue Andrew Sisook´s quote:

Grandmaster Yip stopped for awhile. He then talked i a rather low tone: “The fact is, not too many people could affordd to pay for such a high school fee. For example: at the time I paid, the red packet for the ‘Student-admitting Ceremony’ had to contain 20 taels of silver. And I had to pay 8 taels of silver each month as my school fee.”
A Lot of Money for Learning Kungfu
New Martial Hero: “How much was 20 taels of silver worth, in terms of your living standards?”
Yip Man, after thinking for a while: “For 20 taels of silver you could marry a wife, say if you did it economically. Also, with no more than 1 and a half taels of silver you could buy 1 picul of rice.” The Grandmaster continued: “That was why, at that time, most of the people who learnt kungfu were rich people. These people could leave their jobs and live in the old temples in deep mountains for training. It is not the same as today when people can easily learn kungfu anywhere.”
Shaolin Wahnam is incredibly cheap in comparison to Kung Fu schools of former times.
I am grateful to have the opportunity to learn here from my Sifu, Sigung and all the Family.

                        Great articles!
Thank you very very much Sifu Pavel!

Just for reference, wikipedia says that:
A picul (pronounced /ˈpɪkəl/[1]) or tam,[2] is a traditional Asian unit of weight, defined as "a shoulder-load, as much as a man can carry on a shoulder-pole".
                          Indeed we are very lucky!

Thank you for your effort Sifu Pavel, those stories are priceless!

In my city where I was born, it is "pikul".
