During the recent Becoming a Shaolin Wahnam Practitioner Course we covered among other things how to deal with multiple opponents. Standing alone against a few well trained and well armed individuals could be considered a stressful situation for most people. Sigung of course taught us how to overcome this stressful situation, and left us with a valuable skill which I am sure will take a fair amount of time to unpack and master. The most excellent aspect of our arts are how they carry over to our daily lives, and I was able to experience the immediate benefit of this training to public speaking. A day after I arrived back in California I had an important presentation at my University. Those who know me might not believe it, but I have always had a measure of nervousness formally speaking in front of large groups. However after facing off alone against many highly skilled men and women at this recent course I found I was able to face down my colleagues (who most likely (hopefully) did not have the intention to flay and skewer me) without a shred of apprehension in my stomach. There was no nervousness, only a feeling of fun and happiness. This is just one benefit among many, but one worth sharing I think. I look forward to my next public speaking opportunity to confirm this benefit and build upon the skill.
