  • Favourite techniques in sparring

    Dear all,

I am curious about your second-favourite technique / move as far as free sparring is concerned. Against other Martial Artists or just in free sparring with Brothers and Sisters). I will not ask about your favourite technique as I imagine you will want to keep that a secret of course!

Mine: Chop Fist (or any other technique that uses the ' strike the form' strategy). It could also be my third-most favourite technique actually.

Looking forward to reading your answers!

    Dear brother Roeland,

Interesting discussion! My second favourite technique would be Black Tiger Steals Heart. Simple, direct and effective

For quite some time there, I think that my favorite kung fu pattern to use in sparring somewhat by default used to be Lohan Strikes Drum. But then as I got a little bit more skillful and didn't prefer to engage with peoples arms and legs quite as much, I quickly became partial to "Marvelous Dragon Manifests Glory" as a very fast advancing throw, especially when dealing with opponents who preferred to bounce about as opposed to using stances. One such case was a younger kung fu brother in my kung fu school who came from a taekwondo back ground. Basically before he could react or as soon as he could begin to make a move, I was already on my way in covering both of his arms and sinking into my stance while stepping behind him as I threw him backwards over my leg. After the first time, I think he kind of got some idea of what I was doing and how, but he couldn't adjust for it, I kept using the same strategy and there was still nothing he could do despite knowing what was coming because his footwork was not fast enough to react in time. I then decided to give him some opportunity to fight back and engage more and he came in to attack with what i believe was a jab, cross, followed by a roundhouse kick combination. I avoided all the attacks by widening my stance and sinking back, when his strength was spent on the roundhouse kicked after he missed when i sunk out of range, I quickly shifted back in and had his back, I guarded against both his legs and possible kicks with my bow stance, and tapped him multiple times in the back of his head with my lead hanging fist in "Reverse Hanging Golden Lotus". I then was told not to strike at the back of the head by my older kung fu brother who was refereeing. We started over and began again and I used marvelous dragon to throw him over my lead leg as I moved in again before he could react, this time in anticipation of what was happening I think he either tried to move back or widen his stance in order to give himself more of a chance to attempt to resist this time, it didn't work because as I was moving in, instead of remaing in the back facing bowing arrow stance I continued to shift forward while moving in and changed to a forward facing bow arrow stance as I once again threw him over my lead leg, but this time my lead leg was bent and higher instead of low and straight, while following his momentum and strength, continuing to move forward and giving him no chance to ragain his balance and resist. I had also used a very similar strategy years ago but with "Fell Tree with Roots" as opposed to Marvelous Dragon, and in fact now I do use them interchangably, it just has quite a bit to do with if my opponents stance is typically orthodox or southpaw, and how that works in relation to my poise pattern as I am observing them, which is typically southpaw (even though I prefer to strike with my right) as I am very confident moving in very quickly from left to right when changing from one bow stance to the next, or from one horse stance to the next, or from a bow stance advancing with the rear leg into a horse stance, etc. You get the idea. Those two patterns were my favorite to use to throw my opponents because even if they had quicker hand or foot speed visually, it didn't matter as long as I used my stances appropriately and moved in at the correct time, i.e. when the opponents old strength is spent but his new strength is not replenished, and was sure to avoid the opponents strong points and attack their weak points. As long as I adequately covered both of their hands with one of mine while advancing, despite how fast they may be able to strike out with them, so long as I could cover them and move in faster than they could retreat or shift and adjust to regain an advantageous postion where they could strike again, their visual speed always became completely irrelevant, in those situations my technical speed was the deciding factor, and often before they could understand what had happened.
