    This is exciting news!

Thank you for organising this amazing opportunity.

What a wonderful way to spend the summer; immersed in poetry 😄

    Love & Blessings,
    Parveen
“So I say to you –
This is how to contemplate our conditioned existence in this fleeting world:”

    “Like a tiny drop of dew, or a bubble floating in a stream;
Like a flash of lightning in a summer cloud,
Or a flickering lamp, an illusion, a phantom, or a dream.”

“So is all conditioned existence to be seen.”

    Thus spoke Buddha.

Fly far to the East for a very special stay
And get lost in the flow of the rich Sabah way
Smiles from all around will be a gift for your heart
All just for writing some poetry art
And basking in Malaysia as a prize would be nice
I just hope I can win for eating mango sticky rice
Love, and do what you will.

        Yeah, Andrew.

Will you post this one on the Contest Submissions Thread?

        Kind Regards,

        Charles

P.S. Perhaps later we can have a contest for performance art, and eating mango sticky rice could well win!

To be fair, eating mango sticky rice is in itself a win.

I'm very happy to have people posting and enjoying themselves with )Shaolin( poetry.

So Far: Dagmar, Andrew, Damian Siheng, Ray, and David Langford have taken up the challenge.

We've got more than two months, a whole season to read and compose. I look forward to reading a lot more, perhaps even a mango poem.

How do I know if I've eaten a mango?
da da, da da da, dada da, dada VanGogh

              Like that.

              Tropically Yours,

                Some great entries already ...
One of my students asked a question others might have too, so I'll post it here:

Does the poem have to have a formal structure or can it be free flow? (Rhyme, Rhythm, Length etc.)

                Happy writing!

Poetry submissions do not have to have a formal structure. It can be free flow.

                      Did You Know?

                      Did you know?

That if you click on the foreign language threads that you may have an option in your web browser to translate the page into English? I am using google Chrome, and I just discovered this; there is a certain poetic charm to the computer translations.

From Naoko in the Japanese forum:

It can also spread joy of life of try to write a poem in the summer of memories.
                      I agree fully

Stop the Presses! Now Even More Prizes!

                        Dear Family and Friends,

As if Sifu's generosity and spirit of scholarship were not already amazing, there are now additional prizes as follows.

Rather than a single prize for best non-English poem there will be A prize for each Non-English section of the forum in which there are three or more entries. The prize for each language group will be One Complimentary Regional Course.

So, to be clear, potentially we could see prizes for:

                        Best Chinese Poem in Translation
                        Best French Poem in Translation
                        Best German Poem in Translation
                        Best Japanese Poem in Translation
                        Best Spanish Poem in Translation
                        Best Russian Poem in Translation
                        Best Italian Poem in Translation

and as before, those poems are eligible also for the Grand Prize.

                        Keep your pencils sharp!

                        Happily,

Wow, no way ! It's amazing that Sigung is giving everybody a fighting chance!

                          Althoooough...

Does this mean I could enter a poem in German, French and English? Probably not, but it was worth asking for asking's sake . When it comes to the more scholarly aspects, I'm more for strategy, not poetry but hey! This challenge is really fun to be part of, thank you again for initiating it!

                          Happy practice,
                          Fabienne

                            Fabienne,

                            Bomb's away!

Having thoroughly read the full-length, 16 page rule book, I see nothing in the rules prohibiting one from entering poems in multiple languages. I think you should go for it, since you planted the seed, let's watch it grow!

Do poems have to be actual?
I am asking because I had a poetical phase more than 10 years ago (as a reaction of my husband's illness and death) - and I do not think I am able to rejuvenate it (I tried, but failed) ...

... alles, alles, alles ist doch auf Liebe aufgebaut ..." (Ellen Auerbach, 1997)
