For any dog lovers who will have the good fortune to be in Penang, Malaysia this year, I hope that they will feel emboldened to approach Wei Foong Sije to see if they can visit her dog shelter, and learn from her expertise.

    Expertise in what?

'Like father, like daughter', Wei Foong Sije is a person who walks her talk. She has first-hand experience of mounting a project from scratch, leading to the realization of a physical establishment, and then successfully sustaining it over the long-term to ensure steady and practical 'output' (i.e. reinforcements for the dogs). Few have the commitment and stamina to succeed in the way that Wei Foong Sije has with her vision.

Certainly, I learnt a lot! The trip was full of multiple gains: spending time with the wonderful dogs, learning from Wei Foong Sije, and a very special private lunch at a delicious restaurant with Sifu (Sigung/Sitaigung)!

Thank you, Wei Foong Sije for letting all of us visit the dog shelter, for sharing the touching stories about each dog, and for leading by example the way to abide by the 9th law of the 'Ten Shaolin Laws':

    9. Obliged to be humane, compassionate and spread love, and to realize everlasting peace and happiness for all people...
    - and dogs!

I look forward to the next opportunity to visit 'SPCA-Sungai Petani'.

    With gratitude, love and respect,

    Emiko

    A Fun and Rewarding Trip!

    Dear Family and Friends,

Here we are, already into the fast, flowing energies of the Year of the Horse - some of us are happily riding in the saddle, enjoying the galloping pace, while others may be hanging on for dear life, just trying to stay in the saddle. Thanks to the Shaolin arts, as taught by our beloved Sifu/Sigung/Sitaigung, I am sure that the majority of us belong to the 'happily enjoying the galloping' category.

Today, I would like to share with you a glimpse of the inspiring Dec 2013 trip that some of us went on to visit Wei Foong Sije at her 'second home', the SPCA-Sungai Petani.

Once again, I was delighted - but not surprised - to note that the facilities had improved considerably, with more secure pens for the dogs, and upgraded standards of hygiene.

Most of all, it was heartening to see how - by the general air of peace that pervaded the grounds - the dogs were content and fulfilled to be there.

The following posts contain photos of the visit:

  • Special Invitation: Wei Foong Sije's Project of Compassion - 'Save the Dogs'

    Dear Shaolin Wahnam Family,

In less than a month, I look forward to learning from Sifu, alongside many of you, at the Art of Teaching course in Malaysia.

After the course, I also look forward to joining Wei Foong Sije to go to Sungai Petani to visit the dog shelter that she has been tirelessly supporting and financing for many years. It is called the SPCA (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)-Sungai Petani. I would like to invite those of you who will be in Penang on Dec 6 to consider accompanying us on this worthy and eye-opening trip.

In Malaysia, unlike many other countries, the attitude towards dogs is less than humane, and they are often seen as pests to be gotten rid of - a far cry from the common expression, 'man's best friend'. However, Wei Foong Sije has been a champion of the dogs' cause: she can be seen driving out on a daily basis to various spots on the highway to deliver buckets of food to the dogs that run wild. They know her and anticipate her arrival because she always appears at the same time in each location.

Last December, although I did not accompany Wei Foong Sije on her highway excursions, I was delighted to go with her to visit the dog shelter. There were about 11 or 12 of us who ended up going in a small bus. At the shelter, I was surprised and impressed by how much the facilities had expanded and improved from their humble beginnings of just a hidden plot of land sprouting a handful of hastily-assembled shacks. I can only imagine how much more it will have grown by the time I go this year.

Each dog has a unique story - if you ask Wei Foong Sije, she will be happy to share the stories with you. There are many dogs, some young, some old, some handicapped or ill, but one thing that is certain is that none of them would still be alive were it not for the unflagging efforts of Wei Foong Sije who receives all abandoned dogs left by the shelter's entrance. She cares for each of them, providing food for all, and costly medicine for those who require it. As I recall, there are only one or two volunteers, and they dedicate their time and care for the dogs with zero profit. Wei Foong Sije and Sifu are the main benefactors of this shelter.

So if you are a dog lover who will be in Penang on Dec 6, or even if you are not a dog lover but still around and available on Dec 6, please consider coming along to visit SPCA-Sungai Petani with us. It will be a worthwhile and memorable trip!

To sign up for this outing, please reply here, or send me a PM.

Even if you are not able to go, there are other ways to contribute to Wei Foong Sije's worthy endeavours: donations of any size - big or small - are gratefully received in Ringgit, US dollars, or Euros or Japanese yen. They can be presented directly to Wei Foong Sije at any time.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Shaolin salute - with love and respect,

    Emiko
