  • taijichuan for combat.....

Hi Again to all members !

I'd like to know if any of you have ever used taijiquan in a real fight ?

I have never seen anyone do combat in taichi , not even push hands. ( believe it or not ! )

does anyone know where I can perhaps get a small movie clip of people sparring with taijiquan(Please no scences from Hollywood movies ) ?

when you are in combat , do you do it fast or slow ?
how do you avoid getting hit ?
did you every use Fa Jing on anyone ?

How do you use Fa Jing ?????

I've never been taught about the combat aspects of taichi(except in the books).

Could someone please explain the combat sequences in more detail ?

    Thanks.

    I'm not Taijiquan expert, but...

    1. Taijiquan in combat cannot possibly be slow. Speed is an essential factor in all types of combat. As I understanding it, one of the reasons for practicing Taijiquan slowly is precisely to increase speed.

    2. I have yet to see a good clip of Taijiquan sparring, and I've done a lot of searching.

    3. I have "crossed hands" with a Taijiquan master, and the experience, as cliché as it may sound, was like pushing on a door that you expect to be locked, and it isn't.

I've both used Tai Chi Chuan in sparring and had it used against me.

I once got tossed around like a rag doll with grasping the bird's tail. My opponent had more force than I did and that was key.

I've used Tai Chi Chuan against other people as well, especially Western Boxer's. I won when I had more force.

Seems to be a recurring theme.

It is just as fast as any other martial art in sparring, although the techniques used are a bit different and the "feel" is different. I was sparring with a Wu Tai Chi stylist and he would always diffuse my strikes with a soft redirection. It was frustrating but also a real treat more me to see and feel.

        Hi Kung Fu Joe

        Thanks for the info.

Could you please tell us more.....

e.g : How can Grasping the sparrows tail be used against all forms of attacks?

Do you prefer Taichi or Shaolin Kung fu more ?

There is a section in Master Wong's Tai Chi Chuan website about using Grapsing the Sparrow's Tail against all attacks. I think the best way to train it is to practice with partners of different styles and body types. Get them to practice their different techniques and always respond with peng, lu, etc.

You get good at it by practicing it over and over and over...

I practice Shaolin kung-fu and mainly Dragon Style Shaolin kung-fu at that. I made the decision after much thought. The basic reason is that I am far more familiar with kung-fu than tai chi. I have very modest Tai Chi training and don't really know enough about it to make it my primary art.

That being said, I have always held Tai Chi Chuan in very high regard. If I were to learn something new now, I would probably opt for Tai Chi Chuan because my situation is more conducive to its practice. Since I know many kung-fu techniques and can implement them, however, I would rather practice what I know than try to learn more.

Plus I just love the dragon style.

            Hello,

            Me again!!!

I forgot to mention above that when I found the WahNam group and Master Wong's books, I "emptied my cup". I'm taking what I learned with me, but my wish is to start from the beginning.

My cup is empty. I must make that clear.

I think Kai sihing is the one who should explain how Grasping Sparrow's Tail can be used against many attacks. If I remember the story correctly, he has first-hand experience against Sifu on this subject.
